For OBD2 plug-ins, generally no — the port is designed for third-party devices. For hardwired trackers with switched-live and ground only, usually no, provided installation is professional and documented. For CAN-bus taps, sometimes yes — particularly on premium German marques. Ask the lease provider in writing before commissioning fleet installs on leased vehicles.
Can a renter legally disable the tracker?
Depends on whether they know it exists. If your rental agreement contains the GPS clause and a dash sticker is in place, removing or jamming the tracker is typically a breach of contract and, in most jurisdictions, a criminal act (tampering with the operator's property, sometimes obstruction of a theft investigation).
